With the accident of the Ultra Large Container Ship “MSC Zoe” in January 2019, during which 342 containers were lost overboard a few miles off the Dutch Wadden Islands, the problem of recurring container losses and the associated pollution in an area labelled as “Particularly Sensitive Sea Area” regained public attention.

Supporting clients with their innovations is a core part of MARIN’s strategy and this was recently highlighted when a pioneering floating offshore wind turbine was tested in the Concept Basin.

MARIN’s mission to contribute to a safer and smarter use of our waters led to a pioneering simulation study into the concept of ‘intention sharing’ along the inland waterways.

MARIN took this important step to enable accurate manoeuvring in the vicinity of objects, which is essential during launch and recovery operations.
